FRENCH RIVER
I have always loved the way Tom Thomson portrayed the northern Ontario skies. These skies are never more evident than while canoe-tripping. Paddling a canoe for hours provides ample time to contemplate the play of colours on the water’s surface and the imperfect reflection of the clouds.
In this case, the lake was glassy, and the image was almost perfect. I chose to include the bow of the canoe to emphasize how we are slicing between 2 worlds, the real world above the water line and the infinite depth extending below like an unexplored universe that vanishes to become one with reality as soon as soon as you touch the water’s surface.
